Food, Glorious Food

Growing it, cooking it, eating it.  I love food.  So long as it is vegetarian, I feel I should add that really shouldn't I?

I think I am a moody foody and my mood very much dictates what I will eat.  I could never be one of those "Roast on Sunday, pasta on Monday, stew on Tuesday, salad on Wednesday, pig's trotters on Thursday, fish on Friday, soup on Saturday" types.  Excluding the fleshy options anyway, obviously.

My shopping is usually very unorganised and I seldom have the ingredients in the cupboard/fridge/freezer to suit my whim and am often left disappointed.  No idea why I don't seem to be able to sort that one out!?

I love fancy food, nice food, tasty food, stuff that is a little bit out of the ordinary but at the moment, I think I have what I refer to as "chef's block" and I am firmly wedged into a rut of pasta, pizza, curry, steamed veggies or stir fry.  Alright it is all home-made - no jars or processed stuff (apart from Quorn) but......well.......Ugh!!  Same old, same OLD!  You know!?  Oh - I did make an onion tart last week but....I didn't feel that excited about it really, so I don't think it counts.

Also, the weekly shopping budget of £50 is pretty damned tricky to extend to artichokes or grilled mushrooms in olive oil, asparagus or quails eggs...ooooh  porcinis for risotto....ooooh....double cream for potatoes dauphinoise....also I guess I would become quite fat I suppose.  Add a rather finicky "I'll have beans on toast" husband and an outspoken four year old and achieving mealtime harmony becomes even more of a mission.

Though...perhaps I am doing both of them an injustice really.  Hubby has made improvements to his diet in leaps and bounds over the last twelve months - I mean, he eats fruit now!  And little one has quite a sophisticated palate really...in fact, now I have typed this, maybe it is actually me who just needs a kick in the recipe book!?

Is it just me who finds it so challenging to come up with exciting weekly fayre for the family, which does not involve hours of food prep and cooking or oodles of money?  I think I might be a bit rubbish at this whole household management malarkey.  I'm off to read my Mrs Beeton's.  And bake a courgette cake dammit.
